Rosewell was built                  by Mann Page and                    his son, Mann Page                    II, between 1726-37                  in Gloucester County, Virginia. It was the largest and finest of American houses in the early colonial period, intended to rival in grandeur the Governor's Palace in Williamsburg.
Mann Page (1691-1730) married Judith Carter, the daughter of Robert "King" Carter.  Educated at Eton College and Oxford University, he was a member of the the Governor's Council.  His grandson, John Page, was Governor of Virginia and a roommate and close friend of Thomas Jefferson.
