Shirley Plantation

John Carter (c. 1695-1742) was the eldest son of Robert "King" Carter. He was a member of the Governor's Council and secretary of the colony, a very powerful position in charge of appointing all county clerks.
Shirley Plantation                    was built between                    1723-38 by John                        and Elizabeth Hill Carter in Charles City County, Virginia.  It is the most intact 18th century estate house in Virginia and is occupied by the direct descendents of Edward Hill I who first established the plantation in 1638.
